Find out how bio-bean turns waste coffee into biofuel | Obeo Ltd

 Who is bio-bean?

We’re back with another feature blog post and this week our focus is on bio-bean. This nifty little company is the first in the world to industrialise the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels and biochemicals. Founded in 2013 byArthur Kay, the company has grown rapidly, releasing its first consumer product, Coffee Logs, onto the market in 2016.

Why is waste coffee an issue?

The UK produces 500,000 tonnes of spent coffee grounds every year, most of which is disposed of via landfill where it emits methane. Methane is a colourless, odourless, flammable gas that is a by-product of the decomposition of organic matter. It is harmful to the environment as it’s 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. So, needless to say, any attempt to reduce it is very much worth while!

How bio bean helps

bio-bean works within the existing energy and waste infrastructure to collect spent coffee grounds from coffee shops, offices, transport hubs and coffee factories, recycling them into sustainable and high-performance products and displacing conventional fuels and chemicals. bio-bean recycles spent coffee grounds into biomass briquettes and pellets. It is currently researching into the potential production and application of biodiesel and biochemicals. These can be used to power anything from your home to your factory to your car.

A gift that keeps on giving

What makes bio-bean all the more impressive is that it not only reduces the amount of waste which ends up in landfill but it also displaces conventional fuels and chemicals. Its most recent product, the Coffee Log, can be used in the place of a traditional briquette. These carbon neutral creations are made from the grounds of 25 cups of coffee. Looking after the environment doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality & performance! Coffee Logs produce more heat for your money than other fuels and burn for much longer than wood. They can be used in stoves, wood burners and chimineas.

So now what? Well if you are a business owner in the London area & want to turn your waste coffee into something wonderful then pop them an email here. Otherwise you can show your support by picking up some of their Coffee Logs from one of their online retailers.
